์National Museum of Royal Barges Bangkok

The Royal Barge Procession, a royal ceremony that involves more than fifty gold-crafted barges, is one of the most spectacular events in the world. With a long-run history since Ayutthaya era, the procession aims to transport the king and/or member(s) of the royal family during special events, such as when delivering the new robes to the monks after a Buddhist Lent period.

The museum houses a precious collection of historic barges, some of which were built during the reign of King Rama I, more than two hundred years old. These barges are made of high-quality wood and beautifully decorated with vivid colors, mirrors and gold leaves. Each barge’s figurehead was crafted to represent a different kind of animals, which are vehicles of Rama god according to the Hindu belief. (Thais belief that the kings are avatars of Rama god). Probably the most remembered barge as it’s part of the logo of Tourism Authority of Thailand, the figurehead of the 46-meter-long Suphannahong royal barge features the shape of a mystical swan. It was built in 1911 during the reign of King Rama VI and is one of the four main royal barges which are the vehicles of the king. The other three, which are also the highlights of the museum, are Ananta Nagaraj with naga-shape figurehead, Narai Song Suban with Rama god on a garuda figurehead and Anekchat Puchong. Today, each royal barge procession consists of 52 boats, propelled by more than 2,000 rowers.

National Gallery Museum Bangkok

The historic building of The National Gallery houses one of the most impressive collection of masterpieces by Thai artists. The European-classic architecture formerly housed the Bureau of Royal Thai Mint built during the reign of King Rama V. Collections exhibited here ranges from century-old art works by legendary painters to contemporary-Thai masterpieces by modern-day art masters such as Silp Bhirasri, Misiem Yipinsoi, Chalermchai Kositpipat and Thawan Duchanee.

National Museum Bangkok

Founded in 1887 by the King Rama V, who ordered the move of ancient artifacts and antiques stored in The Grand Palace to the former palace of late prince viceroys. More buildings were later constructed when there were more precious items to exhibit, such as the main building which was built in 1967 and the Buddhaisawan Chapel which was built in 1787 to enshrine Phra Buddha Si Hing, a sacred Buddha image.

The National Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts and antiques founded throughout Thailand, divided into periods of time: from pre-historic eras to old kingdoms (Srivijaya, Dvaravati, Khmer Kingdoms, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya) and the current Rattanakosin era. These include Neolithic tools, painted pots, bronze objects, Buddhist sculptures in stone, bronze and terracotta as well as illustrated scripture books manuscript cabinets and votive plaques.

Guided tours are given free by volunteers in English and French starting at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tours are also given in German on Thursdays and in Japanese on Wednesdays of the first & the third week of each month. Guided tours in some other languages can be arranged.

Museum Siam Bangkok

Housed in a charming vintage mansion formerly the home of the Ministry of Commerce, Museum Siam: Discovery Museum is perhaps the first truly interactive museum in Thailand. The museum’s permanent exhibition emphasizes on the history of the Thai people and their connections to nearby cultures through 17 rooms of multimedia displays and presentations. It also hosts regularly rotating exhibitions on a variety of topics, from food culture to new science innovations. Museum of Sea Shells Bangkok

The Bangkok Seashell Museum is located on Silom Road next to SoiSilom 23, opposite the Lerdsin Hospital. It is convenient to travel to this museum because the buses no 1, 15 and 77 pass it or you can take a BTS to Surasak Station or Taksin Bridge Station or you can take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Taksin Bridge Pier and walk to SoiSilom 23. 

The museum is one of few museums in the world that display beautiful and rare sea shells. It was founded on January 10, 2009 by KhunChomPattamakhanthin, two-time winner on sea shells of the "FaenPhanThae"(real fan) TV programme, who was fascinated by the magic of sea shells. He recognizes the importance of studying sea shells in various aspects for the benefits of Thai youths and interested groups. It can be a new colorful tourist site of Bangkok, where people will be excited about a wide variety of sea shells. That is why the museum was established.  It exhibits sea shells from every corner of the world that were collected and studied from generation to generation for decades. 

It is a three-storey building, collecting more than 600 kinds of sea shells categorized into each floor so that the visitors can fully experience the beauty and diversity of sea shells.

Floor 1: how to make sea shells “How were sea shells created?” Large different species of sea shells, including bivalves or giant clams are displayed.

Floor 2: The visitors will be dazzled by the colorful and charming sea shells that are called “Jewel of the Sea”.  Conches, colorful tusk shells and bivalves from all over the world are displayed. 

Floor 3: Study of the predation behavior and survival of shells, snails and rare trees, including the display of rare and splendid sea shells such as cowrie shells and cone shells that can kill humans by its poisonous needle. 

It is daily open for the general public and tourists from 10 am to 6.30 pm with no exception at weekends or on public holidays. For the general public and tourists, the entrance fee is 100 baht for Thai and 200 baht for foreigners, and 50 baht for children and students. 

It is created from the intention of a sea shell collector and two-time winner on sea shells of the "FaenPhanThae"(real fan) TV programme, Mr.SomwangPatthamakhanthin and Ms. OraphinSirirat who has loved sea shells since her childhood. It is a three-storey building, exhibiting different kinds of sea shells such as, giant sea shells and sea shells of bivalve molluscs in beautiful colours from every corner of the world, rarely found sea shells of Hoi Bia (marine shells in the family of Cypraeidea) and cones that can kill a human by only attacking with its poisonous dart, as well as shells of land snails and freshwater mollusces. Mrs. Flower Chocolate Museum Bangkok

Mrs. Flowers Chocolate Museum is located at 304, Rom Klao road between soi 10 and 12, Minburi, Bangkok. This chocolate museum has been opened for visitors since November 2012 under

Moca Bangkok

The Museum of Contemporary Art is a square building situated on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road. It is designed by a Thai architect in order to match with the Thai art. The building was built as if a whole block of granite was deliberately carved like a stem of jasmine which represents a unique Thai culture. When you walk into the building, you will be able to see the sunlight shrines through the perforated design reflecting all over the clean white building. A lotus-inspired sculpture in front of the entrance is a symbol of the Museum of Contemporary Art of MOCA BANGKOK.

On over 20,000 square meters, there are 5 floors of art spaces which are divided into temporary and permanent exhibitions showing paintings, sculptures, mixed media art, and installation art from Thai master artists for more than 800 works.  It starts with Professor Silpa Bhirasri's bronze statue on G floor and getting more intense on second, third and fourth floor respectively before ending at 5th floor where Thai artworks are exhibited in compare with those by artists from all over the world.

King Prajadhipok Museum Bangkok

King Prajadhipok Museum is situated in the area of the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning Building at the Parn Fah Leelad Bridge. It was built during 1906 with the architecture style in the era of King Rama 6th and King Rama 7th. In King Rama 7th’s era, The King restored this museum as a museum to keep His personal properties and all the important photos and documents. This museum is considered as the most completed museum that uses the new technology to describe all the displays.

The museum consists of 3 levels. Each level has its own story to portray about the King and the Queen. At the first level, is where the story of the Queen is portrayed from Her biography to Her royal duties and also Her Majesty’s private properties. Rocks and Minerals Museum Bangkok

Established in 1948, the Geological Resource Museum is set on the first floor of the Emerald Building, next to the Department of Mineral Resources on Rama VI Road, and is aimed to educate people about the geological resources of Thailand. The exhibition is divided into three sections: (1) Geology: featuring the Earth, plate movements, earthquakes, minerals and rocks, geological surveys, ground water and fossils; (2) Mineral Resources: displaying specimens of gemstones and precious stones, uses of minerals, mineral fuels, petroleum and minerals from abroad; and (3) Special Exhibition, currently showcasing dinosaur fossils in Thailand.

Gem and Jewelry Museum, Silom Bangkok

The Gem and Jewelry Museum is one of the tourist attractions in the category of museum that exhibits gemstones and jewelry. Located right in the heart of Bangkok’s prime area on Silom Road in Bang Rak district, the museum primarily aims to enhance knowledge and understanding, and to motivate youths and general people to recognize the value of Thai gems and jewelry. Moreover, it functions as the place for the preservation of gems and jewelry samples for the next generations.

The Gem and Jewelry Museum was officially established on Thursday,the 26th of August 2004. The institute invited Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra to preside over the opening ceremony in order to commemorate the Princess’ 80th birthday anniversary and for good fortune of the museum, staff, and all related people.

In this museum, gemstones and jewelry are completely shown with the concept that visitors should be able understand the origin of these gems from the upstream to the downstream. The exhibitions are grouped into several zones, as follows.

Bank of Thailand Museum Bangkok

A visit to the bank of thailand allows visitors to admire two things: the history of the monetary system of Thailand and the beauty of the mansion it sets in. Set in a egg-shell-colored European renaissance mansion of Bang Khun Phrom, which was built during the 1900s to be a residence of Prince Boribhat Sukhumbhand, a son of the revered King Rama V. The history of Thai monetary system is narrated in 14 chambers, each of which tells a different story from the formation of local exchange system to when Thailand had bonded the local currency, Thai Baht, to the global monetary system. You will get to see a precious collection of ancient coins, banknotes and old photographs.

            Important rooms include the (1) Ancient Coins Room that displays a vast collection of previous coins from prehistory to current coins., (2) Thai Banknotes Room that sees an evolution of Thai paper money, and (3) The Bank of Thailand 60th Anniversary Room where visitors learn roles and responsibilities of the bank to help strengthen Thai economics.

Batcat Museum and Toy Thailand Bangkok

Perhaps the largest and first of its kind in Asia, Batcat Museum and Toy owns the largest collection of superheroes’ (Batman, Superman, and Spiderman, to name a few) collectibles and toys, ranging from mini-figures to life-sized models. Imagine you will be surrounded by some 50,000 collectibles of superheroes you were dreaming of when you were just a kid. Some of which were created in the 60s and no longer on display elsewhere.

Bangrak Museum

Bangkok Folk Museum was established by the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department. The museum project was initiated since 2003 with the very first museums constructed in four areas, one of which is Bangrak Museum or Bangkokian Museum. This is the place where the visitors can learn about local history, culture, art, and intellect.

Bangkokian Museum or Bangkok Folk Museum in Bangrak is situated in house number 273,  Soi Charoen Krung 43, Charoen Krung Road, Bangrak District, Bangkok (opposite to Bangrak’s General Post Office). It is an ancient house built in 1937 where its owner has preserved a lot of goods and antiques. There are many buses that pass this place on Charoen Krung Road which are the bus number 1, 16, 35, 75, and 93.

Bangkokian Museum was started by Ajarn Waraporn Surawadee’s intention to change the house into museum for students to study. This house was inherited from her mother, Sa-Ang Surawadee (Tan Boon Teck), and then restored into private museum like present. After that, the house ownership was transferred to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority in October 1, 2004.

The museum is located in Bangrak community area, which has been an important place for holiday relaxation, international meeting, and business arrangement, since the end of Ayutthaya Period. As a result,  the content of the exhibition is about the Bangkokian middle class’ lifestyles, before and after the Second World War; the history of Bangrak; the story of Bangrak and Thailand’s development, such as road construction, transport, trading area development, and beginning of real estate business; as well as, many interesting places that deal with the community’s historical background, such as Assumption Cathedral, Lerdsin Hospital, Wat Mahapruettharam Worawihan, Wat Phra Sri Maha Uma Devi, Bangkok Christian College, the first flat in Thailand, and the first club in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V. This area is also where many famous people lived, such as Luang Praditmanutham, Dr. Puey Ungphakorn, and Prof. Suluck Siwaluck.

Bangkok Noi District Museum

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Departmenthas initiated the project of Bangkok Metropolitan Local Museum in 2003. At the beginning, there were local museums founded in 4 pilot districts, and one of them is Bangkok Noi District Museum. It is established by the Bureau of Social Welfare in order to circulate the knowledge about history, culture, art and wisdom to local communities. Bangkok Noi District Museum utilizes a building of Suwannaram Wittayakom School. It is accessible by bus numbers: 40, 42, 56, 68, 80, 175, 510 and 509.

Bangkok Noi District Museum exhibits the rapid growth of communities along the New Chao Phraya River in a beautiful and realistic way. In the Royal Criminal law, such communities were referred to as “Thonburi Sri MahaSamut”. The museum also depicts the physical topography in the past, the origin of Bangkok, and other important places, such as Bangkok Noi rail station, Siriraj hospital, the Naval Dockyard, etc. The exhibition also covers the life of Phra Somdej Buddhajahn Toh Phromrangsi, the highly venerable monk who resided in Bangkok Noi district. Visitors will get to know about the glorious past including the liberation of the country by King Taksin the Great and the massive immigration to settle down in Thonburi. There are a large number of photographs and models to illustrate each of the stories.

Bangkok Metropolitan Local Museums

Bangkok has 50 districts and every district has its own charms, developed upon local culture and by local communities. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration thus supports each district to establishing its own local museum at the district’s major temple or school to act as a learning center for both people in the community and visitors to learn about the history, local produces and major attractions.

One of the highlight is the local museum of Phra Nakhon district. It is set in an elegant, Thai house built in 1914, once belonged to Phraya Ammaretsombat. Apart from the charming beauty of the classic house and surrounding area, you can browse around the collection of artifacts telling the history of Phra Nakorn as well as old photographs of old Bangkok when it was Venice of the East and residents were travelling in canals.

Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm.

Bang Khun Thian District Museum Bangkok

Bang KhunThian District Museum or Bangkok Metropolitan Local Museum at Bang KhunThian District is situated in the premises of the KlongPhitayalongkorn School, Rama II, Tha Kham subdistrict, Bang KhunThain district, Bangkok.

Bang KhunThian District Museum was initiated by the Bureau of Social Welfarein order to circulate the knowledge about history, culture, art and wisdom to local communities. Bangkok Noi District Museum utilizes a building ofKlongPhitayalongkorn School inTha Kham subdistrict, Bang KhunThain district. The museum presents the way of life of Bang KhunThain people, the etymological origin of the name of the district, local fruit orchards, Bang Mod orange plantation, rice farming methods in the past, antique tools and equipment. Most of the collection have been donated by the locals. Many individualshave shown their consent to grant the school these artifacts hoping that their belongings might be beneficial to the community.

In addition, the exhibition also deals with the history of art and archeological studies, occupation and self-development of Bang KhunThain community, physical configuration of Bangkok, the path of King Taksin the Great’s army troops, etc. Visitors will get to know local important persons, such as SunthornPhu and Phra Bat SomdetPhraNangklaoChaoyuhua. The information about the mangrove forest and other natural tourist attractions in Bang KhunThian can be found in the museum as well. There are bicycle renting services to accommodate tourists who would like to see the mangrove forest or the saltwater agricultural improvement project.

Bang KhunThian District Museum is open to the public every day from 9.00 – 16.00. Free entrance for all visitors.
